Commercialbank Qatar Masters

Volunteers behind the scenes heroes

Over 300 dedicated volunteers have kept the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters ticking this week, helping to ensure that thousands of event spectators enjoy a world-class experience as the action unfolds at Doha Golf Club. Volunteers are vital to the success of the tournament, as they assist organisers in delivering a key event in The European Tour international schedule.

This year’s volunteers hail from 26 countries all around the world, some coming from as far as Scotland, Belgium, USA and New Zealand to get involved in the event, which is now in its 17th year. Some have been volunteering since the very first Commercial Bank Qatar Masters tournament in 1998, and return each and every year to get involved with Qatar’s leading golf event.

Valerie Dalton, Volunteer Co-ordinator for the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters, explains the scale of the operation. “I have been co-ordinating the volunteers operation for five years along with my husband Albert, who is Chief Marshal, and we really do love it! My role is to schedule and co-ordinate over 310 volunteers in various positions all around the golf course during event week, such as walking scorer, walking carry board, on course scoreboards, marshals, TV assistants and driving range assistants.”

Valerie continues, “The people I have met and friendships I have formed along the way are priceless, the pleasure of witnessing the excitement of hundreds of excited volunteers is fantastic. Plus there’s the bonus of getting up close to the professional golfers and seeing the golf action as it happens, which is a great perk for many of our volunteers who love the game.”

Building services engineering consultant Richard Ingall has volunteered at the tournament every single year since its inception and this year has been in charge of a 16-strong team of TV assistants who help ensure that the world can view the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters on television. “It gives the people involved a great adrenalin rush,” Richard said. “It’s great to see the team come off the course on the final day with huge smiles on their faces.”

Hassan Al Nuaimi, President, Qatar Golf Association said, “We are delighted that Commercial Bank Qatar Masters draws in so many dedicated volunteers each year. Volunteers are critical to the quality of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters and many of them have told me that it is a very rewarding experience. It is down to their enthusiasm and commitment that this year’s tournament has been a great success for both the golfers and the spectators.”
