With the 2022 World Cup in Qatar on the horizon, football tends to touch much that goes on here, and that definitely has been the case this week so far at the 2013 Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.
First it was a surprise visit from Manchester United during the opening round Wednesday, then a lively penalty kick contest broke out at Doha Golf Club Friday between 'Team Golf' (five European Tour pros, including Henrik Stenson) and 'Team Football' (a number of young Qatari stars and future World Cup hopefuls from local club Al Sadd).
Additionally, Thursday featured an unexpected football gift for fast-rising Danish golfer and major Manchester United fan Thorbjorn Olesen. Olesen was presented with a Wayne Rooney-signed, personalised Red Devils jersey (with Olesen written on the back) after he left the 18th green at the end of his second round.
Olesen sported a wide grin as he received the shirt, but that was likely due to his play on the course, as well as the surprise gift. The 23 year old shot his second consecutive 68, putting him at 8 under through two rounds, tied for second and one back of the lead.
Olesen claimed his first European Tour victory last year at the Sicilian Open.
